Mr. Hermes is Medtronic’s Entrepreneur in Residence responsible for the incubation of technologies to revolutionize the practice of surgery. For the last four years, he has led the team that will launch Medtronic’s first surgical robot.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Hermes served as Chief Technology Officer, Vice President, Research and Development (R&D) for Covidien’s Surgical Solutions segment. Since joining the Company in 1991, Paul’s teams have launched some of the medical device industry’s benchmark products including the TriStapleTM, iDriveTM, SILSTM, AbsorbaTackTM and LigaSureTM product lines. He has been instrumental in revitalizing the company’s product portfolio, and established Covidien’s first innovation footprint in Asia.
Mr. Hermes is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He is the holder of a number of US and international patents. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Technology Council. He is the President of the Board for New Haven Symphony and he serves on the Advisory Board for the University of New Haven School of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of the Board of Directors at MindUP – The Digital Health Incubator and he is an advisory board member of a number of startups and accelerators. Mr. Hermes has been honored with the highest technical honors of Covidien and Medtronic - the 2014 Covidien Chairman’s Lifetime Innovator Award and a 2015 induction into the Medtronic Bakken Society.
